Mastiffs are not dogs, they are Mastiffs. These words ring so true to us. Mastiffs are a breed who want to be with you all the time whether it’s laying in the sun while you have your morning coffee outside to laying on your feet while you are on the computer. They have their downsides which you must realize before you get one!! They drool and can shake a slinger all the way to the ceiling so if you don’t like to wash walls often, we suggest another breed. Our girls live in the house and each has their own bed in our bedroom, although Spice thinks the king size bed is hers. Mastiffs are happiest with their people so being house dogs is critical for the breed. Each of our Mastiffs has their own unique personality and quirks which we find totally endearing. While we believe mastiffs are the best breed of dogs, they are not for everyone. If you are looking for a training partner for a marathon, hate the thought of drool over everything, want an outside protection dog, hate a dog on your furniture, or are a tidy freak, then get another breed or don’t get a dog. If however, you love a dog to be with you in a gentle way, love a dog that snuggles, like to take easy walks, love a HUGE lovebug, and don't mind drool then perhaps a Mastiff is the breed for you. When we lived in a cooler climate, we would hike the girls every day from 1-2 hours. The Mastiffs loved the hikes but we had to carry almost 2 gallons of water with us! Now that we live in heat, ours love swimming and the pool has been taken over by them. Exercise is critical to a mastiff but it needs to be gentle, easy and AFTER they are 20-22 months old!! Puppies should only free play and no walks for them. Socialization is critical to a mastiff’s temperament. We take the dogs to Petsmart, Home Depot, to the campus of the University, to soccer matches, etc. They must be exposed to all kinds of situations and people. We took Onyx and Karma across the country as we spent 6 weeks traveling when she was only 7 months old. She camped, hoteled, stayed with friends and family, met all kinds of people, animals, dogs, and she was a very wonderful companion who was self assured and happy all the time---well except in the show ring!
